First Confirmed Minnesota Tornado of 2007

A damage survey revealed that a weak tornado briefly touched down Wednesday in western Goodhue County.  The tornado was rated EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with winds of 65 to 85 mph.

The tornado touched down at about 4:10 pm CDT, 5 miles southeast of Dennison.  It was on the ground for 2 miles, dissipating 5 miles east-southeast of Dennison.  Its maximum width was 50 yards.  Scattered trees were broken or uprooted.

This was the first confirmed tornado in Minnesota in 2007.

The public had also reported a tornado at 4:25 pm CDT in an open field 2 miles southeast of Wanamingo in Goodhue County.  This report remains unconfirmed, as the National Weather Service has been attempting to contact all eyewitnesses and to locate any corroborating pictures or video.  Radar signatures indicate it may well have been outflow instead of a tornado.

Downburst Produces Significant Damage in Plymouth

A strong thunderstorm moved across Hennepin County, producing damage in the Plymouth area.  The National Weather Service received numerous reports of damage, including an overturned semi trailer near Highway 55 and Interstate 494, where a trained storm spotter reported witnessing a downburst at 2:10 pm CDT.  Damage to the roof of a commercial building and downed power lines and tree branches were also reported.  The damage to power lines resulted in a fairly widespread power outage in the Plymouth area.

A National Weather Service official was dispatched to Plymouth to survey the damage and confirmed that the damage was indeed produced by a downburst.  The official reported that the full dimension of the downburst is unknown but estimated that the damage extent was likely around 1 mile.

A downburst is a column of sinking air in a thunderstorm that is capable of producing damaging straightline winds and damage similar to that of a tornado.
